Our Reviews

Here's what our lovely guests have had to say...

  • Wonderful hosts, extremely clean and felt very looked after. Breakfast to brilliant too.
Tricky access from the road on a corner. But the hosts make it easy to navigate.

Perfection! A gorgeous B&B with amazing attention to detail. Rooms are absolutely spotless, very well appointed and have been beautifully decorated.
Located in a gorgeous countryside setting which is so peaceful.
The hosts, Natalie & Ray, go above and beyond and are delightful. Nothing is too much trouble and always done with a smile. Friendly and welcoming to their guests from the moment you arrive to the time that you leave (also applying to policies regarding Covid to make you feel secure at the same time).
The breakfast selection is incredible and everything is fresh (home grown/home made too) and totally delicious.
We would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay in this area or even if you don't, go to Handywater anyway!
We will be back!! Thank you so much!!

Wonderful walks directly from the B&B (ask Ray for his tips and a map). A nice walk into Henley (about 30 mins strolling and set back from the main road) for all of it's shops and restaurants. We tried the Boathouse which was a great location and excellent service. We also visited the chain Café Rouge which again delivered great service. All very covid secure.
Various walks along the riverside in either direction.
Stonar House & gardens is also a treat.

    Stonor Park worth a visit
Thames path walk as recommended by Ray was worth a visit too.
Dined at Boathouse bistro which was lovely setting & v good food/wine list.

  • Quality bedding, room clean, taxi service provided by hosts.
Nowhere to put the throw and cushions that dressed the bed other than on the floor ,could have done with an ottoman to keep them off the floor. Would have preferred the breakfast grilled instead of cooked in olive oil, too greasy for us.

  • Lovely location and views from our patio where we spent some time relaxing and watching the antics of the hens. Raymond and Natalie were perfect hosts everything was clean and safe. The beds were incredibly comfortable and breakfast was lovely with lots of fresh fruit.
Can’t think of anything we didn’t like

  • Ideal place for us. Comfortable, friendly and we left vowing to return in the future.
The accommodation was excellent, comfortable with lots of attention to detail from Natalie and Ray. We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco and were treated as though we were old friends. The breakfast was superb and we had the added treat of tasting Natalie's marmalade that she makes herself. Delicious. The location was also great because we could spend time in Henley which was just over a mile away.
There was nothing we didn't like and even though we spent just the one night here we left already talking about returning at some point in the future.

  • What more can you say.......
There is not a lot you can add to 40 reviews unanimously rating a property as excellent, except maybe to confirm that in these difficult times, it is business as usual at Handywater Cottage. We stayed to attend a music event at the Crooked Billet, the owners took us up there for 7.00 and brought us back at 11.00. The breakfast was excellent we bought a jar of the homemade marmalade and left with complimentary free range eggs. Natalie and Ray are people who set the bar high, they work hard on delivering that little bit extra we all hope for when we are staying away from home, and deliver it in spades. Thoroughly recommended.

My husband and I had a truly wonderful 2 night stay at Handywater. Everything from arrival to departure was perfect. Natalie and Ray were very friendly, welcoming hosts who went above and beyond to ensure our stay was 5*. From the deliciously prepared breakfasts every morning, to the local recommendations to fill our time and being shown around their land to meet their chickens and gorgeous cats. It felt like we were visiting old friends. The rooms were incredibly stylish, spotless and a perfect temperature. Very comfortable bed! Covid-19 hygiene measures were the best I've come across so far. We wished we could have stayed longer.

My husband and I did the Henley-Hambleden walk, which was a lovely day walk allowing us to enjoy the countryside views and then have a wander around Henley-on-Thames for a spot of shopping, lunch and a coffee. We also went to the Crooked Billet pub for dinner on Saturday night (a recommendation from Natalie and also featured on the Handywater website) which I would highly recommend.

Beautiful building, the world’s comfiest bed and the warmest, loveliest hosts you could wish for - this B&B is a real little gem.
The communication from Natalie before we arrived was superb and my girlfriend and I were both excited for our bank holiday weekend away after reading so many glowing reviews.
It’s located in an ideal position if you want to explore Henley or, as we did, visit Fairmile Vineyard for a bottle or two of bubbly.
However, Handywater Cottage is so much more than just a place to stay.
When you pass through the heavy wooden gates into the cottage’s grounds, it is like being transported into a different (much happier) world that Enid Blyton’s imagination would have been proud of. Natalie and Ray welcomed us like we were old friends and we sat in their garden - complete with beautiful flowers, a water lilies-style miniature bridge over a stunning Koi pond - chatting as we checked in and selected our breakfast for the following day.
The room itself was gorgeous - immaculately clean with a gigantic shower and a bed that provided me with the best night’s sleep I’ve had in living memory. We also had our own private terrace that I’m sure we would have enjoyed much more if the weather had been behaving!
The following day, breakfast was served in an incredibly elegant dining room - the display cabinet heaving with the hosts’ collection of antique ornaments and the walls decorated with their (much deserved) awards for hospitality.
And the food itself was delicious - Natalie was at pains to ensure we had everything we needed and the presentation (right down to the cat-shaped tea pot and fresh fruit on a stick) made everything feel even more quaint and special.
It is clear that for Natalie and Ray this is far more than just a business - they throw their hearts into it and really care about their guests’ experience.
I can’t end this review without also mentioning Monty - their beautiful and very friendly Burmese cat with the most distinctive purr we’d ever heard!
A very happy weekend and we look forward to returning in the future.

My wife and I spent two nights at this luxury B and B. Natalie and Ray were excellent hosts, very friendly and welcoming. The accommodation is purpose built around a courtyard of a cottage. Very well presented and spotless. The whole property is delightful with lovely gardens and a paddock where the chickens roam. The secluded terrace outside our room made it more of a holiday, being able to sit and read, drink and eat or just enjoy the beautiful Chiltern hills. The scrambled eggs with sausage and bacon was very tasty along with the usual wide range of breakfast goodies available. Natalies award winning marmalade was yummy!

Ray and Natalie are truly delightful hosts and as others have said nothing at all is too much trouble. Exceptionally clean and comfortable accommodation. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented in a wonderful cosy room plus the homemade marmalade is not to be missed! We will be returning!

The best BnB experience we have ever had. We have stayed and experienced quite a few bnb across the UK, this was out of the world. The quality of the room, bedding, facilities were better than any 5-star hotel. Natalie and Ray our host, were the friendliest and kind people ever. They make you feel like you are staying with your long-time friends. The house and surroundings were out of a fairytale. I would definitely recommend staying once.

  • Fantastic

Natalie and Raymond made us very welcome with Prosecco as we booked in.. They gave us the bigger Lavender room because we were staying three nights. The food was amazing, cooked to order and ready when we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble. This is the second year we have stayed and will be staying again next year, work permitting.

  • Outstanding!!

Thee best Bed & Breakfast I have ever stayed in.

    10/10 for everything!
Ray & Natalie were superb hosts. They made us feel extremely welcome from the minute we arrived. The Prosecco on arrival was a very nice touch.
We stayed here as we’d booked a vineyard tour at Chiltern Valley vineyard & Brewery (which I highly recommend) and they ever so kindly chauffeured me and the Mrs there and back which was such amazing service.
Ray & Natalie went out of there way to make sure we were happy every minute we were there. They recommended us lots of local places to explore and great places to dine. There was a pub next door which was on the Michelin guide. The food was fantastic.
The room was outstanding and luxurious. We stayed in “Lavender” which was gleaming! Huge comfy double bed, lovely and warm, huge walk in wardrobe, large rainfall shower, mini fridge, iron, large flat screen TV with Netflix etc etc.
The full English breakfast was exceptional. Ray & Natalie use handpicked fruit and veg from the local markets and local meats too. Lavazza coffee was a winner.
The continental breakfast was also brilliant with a huge variety of fresh options to choose from.
Fantastic value for money and exceptional hosts.
Great location for Central London, Oxford and Bicester shopping outlet too.
Highly recommend for a country, cosy getaway.
Thank you for a memorable stay

A warm and friendly welcome. A lovely and comfortable room with those extra touches, such as fresh flowers. Everywhere was sparklingly clean. Breakfast was very enjoyable with a good choice and tasty food. The location is quiet but you can walk out into the countryside or drive out to Henley and other scenic locations very easily. We had booked a tasting at a local winery and brewery. Ray kindly dropped us off at the venue, and Natalie collected us a couple of hours later - nothing was too much trouble for them.

A superb breakfast each morning complemented the luxurious accommodation. Everything we needed was in the room - the bed was extremely comfortable.

  • Absolutely beautiful.
Cannot praise Handywater Cottage and it's delightful hosts, Natalie and Ray, enough. We drove through the electric gates to be greeted by charming Natalie who led us into the house and handed us glasses of Prosecco. Now that's the way to arrive! We had chosen the Wisteria room. It was beautifully and immaculately furnished to a very high standard with every possible facility. Natalie showed us how everything worked and led us on to the small terrace with table, chairs and a lounger and a stunning view. Such a pity we were only staying for one night. We chose our options for breakfast which is taken in the main house. My husband chose the full English and I chose the lighter option. We were both overwhelmed by the quality, variety and presentation. Fresh fruit skewers were to die for as was the homemade marmalade.
Natalie and Ray are the most charming hosts and made us feel more like friends than guests. An absolute gem of a place and we can't wait to go back.

Natalie’s breakfasts are magnificent, both in taste and presentation and her homemade marmalade is so good we bought a couple of jars to take home.

Each of the cottages have been constructed and fitted to a very high standard with quality furnishings and bed linen giving each a luxurious feel and ambience.

Henley-on-Thames has something for everyone. An idyllic setting along the Thames and a vibrancy from the life on and along the river. As well as some of the national retailers there is a healthy collection of local, family run businesses offering a wide variety of goods and services which have disappeared from other locations. Bookshops and an upmarket cycle shop particularly caught our interest.

Frog Hall garden centre is worth a visit for a wide range of healthy plants.

Park at the Rugby Club all day for around £3.

Visit the Crooked Billet at Stoke Row for fantastic food and service.

Visit some of the nearby villages where Midsomer Murders have been filmed.

  • From the second we arrived to the minute we departed we were made to feel so welcome. The property and surroundings are fantastic, as was the room. We stayed for only one night but regretted this not being longer from the moment we arrived. Our hosts Ray and Natalie were great company and we will definitely return...this time for longer!!! Thank you so much.

  • Apart from the first class welcome and the "nothing is too much trouble" approach, Natalie and Ray are two of the nicest most interesting people that I have met in years. The accommodation was so tasteful and comfortable and they both went out of the way to please. A first class accommodation owned and run by outstanding people. Thank you Natalie and Ray ...it was such a great pleasure to meet you and I wish you well !

  • Excellent Henley-on-Thames B&B
Excellent B&B. Lovely views. Great mattress. Toiletries & so on like a high end hotel. Nice & quiet. Super breakfast selection which was beautifully cooked. Very helpful & friendly hosts who even gave me a lift to a nearby party I attended. Highly recommended

  • A little piece of heaven
Handywater B&B is the. best accommodation we have stayed in, everything was spotlessly clean and the attention to detail was amazing. Natalie and Ray were very friendly hosts and it made our short break enjoyable.
The breakfasts were excellent and Natalie's marmalade was delicious.
    Thank you both so much.

    Tips for other travellers
We were recommended Luscombes at the Goled Ball to eat, this is a Michelin Star Pub/restaurant and most certainly didn’t disappoint and is right next door the accommodation.

A lovely walk along the towpath and a river cruise with Hobbs of Henley, we were only there for two days but will return to enjoy more of this lovely area.

  • Mini break in Henley on Thames
We stayed in Handywater B&B as we were celebrating our granddaughters 30th Birthday in Henley that week . The hosts were very friendly people and couldn't do enough to ensure our stay was enjoyable. The accommodation was excellent beautifully clean and the room we stayed in was fit for a princess. Those were my words as I entered the room. Would strongly recommend an extended stay in the B&B if you are exploring the area. We had a wonderful mini break and at 90 years of age it's one to remember. Thank you to Natalie and Ray

  • Our wonderful mini break in lower Assendon at Handywater cottage

Location and standard of accommodation was excellent. Breakfast was provided on request of time to suit us not the owner which was a nice touch.

As two elderly guests we would have appreciated a handrail in the shower for safety although an anti slip mat was available in the shower we still felt a little unsafe whilst using the facility. Otherwise everything was lovely and clean and toiletries were provided. Access to the property and exit was a little difficult due to the angles of the electric gate and road side entrances.

  • Stayed here two nights when attending a wedding in the area
Natalie & Raymond were wonderful hosts. We received a warm welcome and a cold glass of prosecco on arrival. The rooms were clean and beautifully appointed. After the main wedding reception, we returned to the B&B to prepare for the evening do. Natalie & Raymond gave us a lift back to the venue and then collected us at the end of the evening. All this without any charge ! They really offered a service above and beyond what was expected of them. A real jewel in the Oxfordshire countryside !

  • 5* star B&B No Sir its 6* Star plus 2* more stars for the owners
On arrival greeted by the most glamourous landlady Natalie and Husband Ray with a welcome glass of Prosecco to there beautiful 600 year old house ,instantly transported to a world of luxury and precision to detail. Thank you for the privilege of staying in your wonderful comer of the world.

" Oh you are going to a wedding in the middle of nowhere , don't worry ,we will take you and bring you back " Natalie said and did all part of the service. ( Four seasons Hotel look out )
The rooms are tastefully stylised with spotlessly clean facilities and are beyond expectation, we stayed 2 nights. The breakfast choices were varied and would please any food lover Full English, Smoked Salmon and Eggs, to a myriad of preserves fruit and yogurts , Natalie's home made marmalade appealed to my bitter taste, yummy.

A truly wonderful property with the most amazing hosts. The room was gorgeous with every comfort and impeccably clean. The welcome was second to none and we still have dreams about the breakfasts.
The location is ideal, just a short ride from the town whilst also deep in the heart of the countryside. Plenty of attractions nearby and wonderful pubs as well. We echo the conclusion of previous visitors who say it is the best they have ever stayed in. We will visit again without a shadow of a doubt.

  • Handywater Cottage excels again!

We have stayed at Handywater on several occasions. As usual our kind hosts Natalie and Ray were there to welcome us to their lovely , luxury B&B. We stayed in the new rooms built in 2018 and the stay was excellent in every respect. In our view it is by a long way the best accommodation in Henley. Rooms are modern, beds very comfortable with very high quality en-suite bathrooms. The new rooms contain a pleasant seating area. Breakfast using locally sourced materials was excellent and cooked to your order. Location just outside Henley is peaceful and the garden area very nice. You can park inside the cottage grounds in a secure area. I can honestly say that I find improvements very difficult to identify. Above all Ray and Natalie are outstanding hosts and we are looking forward to returning later this year.

  • Immaculate
What a stylish place; purpose built chalets, backing on to open fields and hills. The rooms are beautifully presented and well maintained, with lots of little gestures you’d only expect to find in the most luxurious hotels (eye masks, for example), as well as tea & coffee in the room, mini toiletry pack etc.

Breakfast was included and was delicious, with eggs from their own hens and homemade marmalade.

The icing on the cake, however, is provided by the owners, Natalie and Ray who not only welcome guests with open arms (and, in our case, a glass of Prosecco) but also make the most hilarious double act (gently bickering in the most loving way).

We were attending a wedding reception locally (at the Crown Inn in Pishill) and Ray kindly drove us over there in the afternoon; good job too since the local taxi firm (based in Henley-on-Thames) charged an extortionate £25 for the return journey in the evening.

I can’t recommend this B&B highly enough. The rooms aren’t cheap but we had a lovely time, slept well, ate well and felt generally well looked after.

I booked all four of their cottages to accommodate friends who were attending my 70th Birthday Party in the next door restaurant. Every one of them was delighted with their rooms, the quality of the breakfast and the friendly welcome. The cottages are in a lovely position close to Henley and many of the lovely walks in the area.

  • We felt that we arrived as guests and left as friends.

Natalie & Ray were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble from inviting us to a welcome drink to providing an amazing breakfast the following morning. The room was modern and clean and absolutely everything you could possibly want was provided. Additionally the view from the room across the valley together with a patio made it exceptional. We have never stayed anywhere where the hosts have been so attentive and friendly. It is definitely not to be missed if you are staying anywhere near Henley on Thames.

There was absolutely nothing about the place or the hosts that anyone could possible dislike.

Being forced to stay in large characterless hotels while working it has been much more enjoyable since retiring to stay in small hotels and delightful B and Bs worldwide like Handywater Cottage. We’ve toured extensively in Europe, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand and I can honestly say Natalie’s breakfast is right up with the best worldwide!

Guests stay in cottages set apart from the main house. The cottages themselves are charming, very tastefully decorated and extremely comfortable. The couple who run them from the main house are absolutely delightful and it is a long time since i’ve been presented with such a generous and delicious breakfast. As a place to stay for one night/a week/a month.....I could not recommend it highly enough.

  • This is one of the best B&B's we have EVER visited...

This is one of the best B&B's we have EVER visited... I really wanted to take my partner to visit Henley-On-Thames for our 2 year Anniversary. Looking around for local B&B's I came across the gorgeous Handywater Cottage and the genuine couple and hosts – Natalie (who runs and manages the B&B) and Ray (who provides the entertainment). I read all the reviews on Booking.com with a little pinch of salt. Could it really be as amazing as all the recommendations were implying? I needn't of worried. Not only did Handywater Cottage meet our expectations, it far far exceeded them. 5 STARS and 10/10 until the cows come home! From the kind and warm welcome (and the delicious prosecco shared with our hosts when we arrived) to the gorgeous cottage we stayed in – it was such a magical experience. Natalie and Ray really could not have done any more for us. The room was stunning and spotless, the bed super comfy with all the mod cons you could ask for. Set in a quiet and peaceful location that was exactly as described by many other reviewers on Booking.com Natalie also highly recommended The Golden Ball/Pub restaurant next door (Michelin Guide recommended for 10 consecutive years) that she booked in advance for us for our evening supper. Sublime food served in comfy and relaxed surroundings, with friendly and efficient staff. We loved it. After a well deserved night's sleep, Natalie's yummy homemade breakfast in the morning was a delight. Ray kindly ferried us into Henley-On-Thames for the day and picked us up to come back to The Handywater Cottage before we headed home to London. We had an amazing Autumn day exploring this beautiful town and walking along the river. Even though it was cold, the Sun didn't stop shining! We adored the cats, the nature, the cottage and the experience. But it was the hosts – Natalie and Ray that made the trip for us. Everything they did was done so so well. Simply brilliant!

Honestly and sincerely, there is nothing to complain about even in the slightest. Natalie's attention to detail and creativeness was sublime, coupled with Ray's humour and hospitality made for such a wonderful combination. Genuinely a memorable trip. Our only regret? We wish we could have stayed longer!

We have had the most perfect overnight stay with our friends at Handywater Cottage . Natalie and Raymond welcomed us with Prosecco, and couldn’t have been kinder hosts. Breakfast was sumptuous and the local area is beautiful for walking. Thank you.

  • A Wonderful B & B with Amazing Facilities and Hospitality.
We were made to feel very welcome upon our arrival at Handywater. Natalie and Ray are the perfect hosts and their wonderful "Cottage" is beyond what most people might expect in the category of a B & B ! Magnificent and extremely comfortable room (Lavender) with all the facilities to match - we had a wonderful stay. Breakfast was in an amazing setting and Natalie went more than the extra mile to make it really enjoyable. Thank you both for your "Friendship" and your "outstanding hospitality" - we have your contact details in the phone ready for our next visit !

  • Wow, amazing and definitely a location/venue I would recommend.
It is the most amazing B&B I have ever stayed in. Natalie and Ray are amazing hosts and made us feel incredibly welcome. I would recommend Handywater to anyone that asked me and we will definitely be going back again in the near future.
We liked everything and do not have a negative word to say about Handywater.

    — Christine, (GB), Reservation number 1425335964, Booking.com, 01 Oct 2018
  • Exceptional
Handywater is an amazing little gem just outside Henley on Thames. There are many great walks you can take just outside the premise and Henley on Thames is a simple 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive. Next door is a great restaurant (Mary Berry ate in there when we visited!) but you are also welcome to eat your own food in the room, plates, cups and cutlery are provided. Breakfast was exceptional, you can choose from a wide range of food and cute touches such as fruit kebabs and a smiley face in the butter! :) The B&B is surrounded by the Chilterns beauty and has a charming garden to relax in. We stayed in the sunflower room which was very spacious and immaculately clean. The room had everything you'd need, including a mini fridge, walk in wardrobe, ironing board and iron, tea and coffee making facilities, toiletries and a hairdryer. The shower had a great pressure and you can choose normal or rainfall. Natalie and Ray were wonderful hosts, they showed us some walks we could do and said they could pick us up if we got tired. They were very willing to hell with any queries we had! Thank you for a fabulous stay, we hope to return soon!
    I couldn't fault it

    — Amber Davison, (GB), Booking.com, 30 Sep 2018
  • Delightful in every way.
When was the last time you stayed at a B&B where the proprietor actually was engaged and seem to care about you? Natalie and Ray are wonderful hosts that ensured all of our cares disappeared and we had a lovely stay. This is outside of the city center, yet not an issue. Close to the train and a delightful town to enjoy the river, park, pubs and shopping. We relaxed in the gardens with the pets. I read for hours in bliss. There is a Michelin star restaurant next door - so heading to town for dinner is not necessary. The crowning touch is the breakfast. It is fully customizable and you can still add and change in the morning. Delicious and such grand service. I do not see how you could be disappointed with a stay here. We were in the Sunflower room which was quite spacious and wonderful. Also, easy access to Heathrow airport. This was our alternative to London at the end of our Tour. There is also an Ale Trail where you can earn a T shirt, yet we did not have enough time (or perseverance) to make it to 9 pubs.

  • If there were Michelin Stars for B&B's then HandyWater deserves 3.
This was a B&B par Excellence. From initial arrival to leaving, Natalie & Raymond could not have been more friendly and attentive to every need. Immaculate room and facilities. Most comfortable bed (We had uninterrupted sleep each night). Superb breakfast. Must not forget the most welcome glass or two of Prosecco on arrival. We do not normally visit the same place twice but I know we will make an exception with the Handywater Cottage B&B.

  • Five stars and definitely 10/10 for us. Cannot fault the accommodation, the location or the hospitality. Natalie and Ray went the extra mile (literally with the pick ups and drop offs!) to ensure our stay was great. Would recommend and also stay again when we are in the area. Many thanks Anne and Ryan

  • Outstanding!
Simply Outstanding!! Beautiful premises and the rooms are sheer luxury! Spotlessly clean and VERY comfortable beds. Very thoughtful touches with complimentary water and soft drinks and luxury toiletries. Though this is just the tip of the iceberg.. the premises are fantastic with gorgeous manicured grounds and beautiful views. Greeted by the most wonderful hosts, Natalie and Ray who offered us Prosecco on arrival and were so warm and welcoming. Natalie and Ray went above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic stay including kindly transporting us to and from a local festival and providing hearty breakfasts of outstanding quality with various options available. This is truly the best accomodation I have ever stayed in and I can't wait to book again next time we are in the UK. Thank you very much Ray and Natalie!!

  • Amazing couple, couldnt do enough for us.
Everything was amazing, we even got a lift to the wedding venue that we were attending! Raymond and natalie could not do enough for us! The room was very clean and facilities very good, 2 mins drive from henley and a prosecco on arrival what more could you ask for! Would recommend to anyone visiting Henley!

    — Liam, (GB), Booking.com, 27 Aug 2018
  • Natalie and Ray are the perfect hosts. We loved everything about our stay from the friendly welcome with prosecco to the facilities in the room (complimentary soft drinks, toiletries and fab shower) and the lovely breakfast made by Natalie's own fair hands. Ray's great sense of humour and the free taxi service to/from the festival just topped off the perfection!! Would love to give it a terrible review just to keep it a secret so there will be space for us in the future, but that wouldn't be fair. Definitely recommend this 5* luxury B&B to anyone wanting a stay in or around the Henley area. We'll be back !!

There was nothing at all to dislike!! However, as someone who likes a cool room I found it a bit too warm; so with the window open, the fan on and removing the duvet from the cover we had a great night's sleep!

    — Susan, (GB), Booking.com, 21 Aug 2018
  • A fabulous place to stay.

  • The best place to stay for a short trip to beautiful Henley!
This is quite literally the best B&B we have ever stayed in. Incredible location, with impeccable facilities - and the hosts Natalie and Ray made us feel incredibly welcome (and even offered to drive us to and from the local pub..if we fancied a drink that evening) There is also a Michelin - starred pub next door, with rabbits etc. / other animals in the beer garden if you don't fancy travelling too far. Cannot recommend highly enough for a relaxing / chic stay in Henley!

We miss you!

Handywater Cottage is a very special B&B, where we felt comfortable all around.
Handywater Cottage has surpassed our expectations despite the very good reviews read. There are two separate buildings with two rooms each. In a building are still terraces with a view in the nature in front of the rooms. The rooms are above average high quality and furnished with great attention to detail. In the walk-in wardrobe there is a fridge full of various (non-alcoholic) drinks, which are provided free of charge. Coffee and tea are also brewed. The highlight of this accommodation, however, are the hosts Nathalie and Raymond, who have given us the feeling of visiting friends. After much too short 3 nights we passed with great melancholy from the Handywater cottage and will definitely come again! Thanks for the great days!!! We miss you!

  • Handywater is truly a special place. We could not have picked a better location. Our hosts, Natalie and Raymond, are truly special folks. Their hospitality, attention to detail, and commitment to delivering a first class experience is unmatched. And the property is an oasis of comfort and peace, especially after a busy day of sightseeing and/or travel. The breakfasts were also special, especially when outside over-looking the wonderful scenery. Handywater will certainly be a place we will return to.

  • We have had a wonderful stay for four nights! A beautiful home, very clean romms and generous and welcoming hosts. We recommend without hesitation Handywater Cottage. There are also beautiful walks along the river Thames and interesting manors like Disrealis House or Greys Court. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed with prosecco. We were made to feel welcome. Natalie and Ray are a lovely and caring couple who enjoy having guests from all parts of the world. Natalie and Ray drove their guests to hidden and romantic pubs for supper. The breakfast was outstanding. There were many personal touches we enjoyed . The breakfast was wonderful and plentiful. Most of all we enjoyed good and witty conversations with Ray, Natalie and other guests. We will be back as soon as we can. Thank you for a wonderful and unforgettable stay. See you soon Natalie and Ray either in Lower Assendon or in Switzerland. And thank you so much for our beloved Laphroig which strengthend our mood and soul.

  • The very best B&B you are ever likely to find !
To start .. the welcome we received when we arrived was as if we were long lost friends ! Prosseco as you sign in and time to get to know the wonderful hosts Ray and Natalie. Having checked if we would like them to take us into Henley for a party we were shown to a fantastic and tasteful room with a great countryside view and a spacious en suite ( also immaculate ) Breakfast which was cooked to perfection was served in a lovely dining room with very attentive service from both Natalie and Ray . We noticed Ray collecting the eggs for breakfast from his chickens first thing in the morning . Finally we were waved away after a thoroughly enjoyable stay . Finally I would conclude that it really isn't an exaggeration that you really would be hard pushed to find somewhere on a par . Thank you Ray and Natalie ,we will be back.

We arrived late on a hot afternoon and Ray and Natalie welcomed us with a cold glass of Prosecco in their lovely garden. Our stay exceeded all expectations. The chalet with en suite shower room was spotless and very tastefully decorated. The bed was king size and wonderfully comfortable. An extra bonus was the lovely patio with gorgeous views across the Oxfordshire countryside. Our hosts could not have been more gracious and helpful, and we will certainly be back.

  • Outstanding - Honestly the best B & B we have ever stayed in, worldwide.
From the moment we arrived and were warmly welcomed with a glass of prosecco, to the moment we left having bought two jars of Natalies' gorgeous home made marmalade, we were made to feel so welcome. Natalie and Ray are a lovely couple and seemed to genuinely enjoy having their visitors. The view from our cottage was beautiful overlooking a paddock with fruit trees in blossom and chickens. We were staying in Henley as my husband was running a 'Tough Mudder' event. He mentioned to Ray that he would be receiving a bottle of cider as he completed the event. Ray asked him if he would like one when he got back that evening. When we arrived back, as soon as we drove up Natalie appeared with two cold bottles of cider and glasses. They really do treat you as part of the family. The breakfast was absolutely the best we have ever had. The personal touches like a blackboard with a personal message for you, together with expected weather for the day. A little smiley face in the butter, music playing. The food was wonderful and plentiful too. Scrambled egg and a mountain of smoked salmon (eggs from the chickens), fruit skewers, porridge, cereals, juice, tea, coffee, croissants, toast, yoghurt and more. Natalie and Ray, we will most definitely be back. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable stay. Carole and Andy x

The weather! Even then, there are umbrellas outside the cottage in case it rained.

  • Short weekend break.
Ray and Natalie were fantastic hosts. The accommodation is great (can't think of anythijg negative to say) and the breakfast was amazing; cannot usurp the egg which was fresh that morning. They went out of their way to help and their warmth adds to the stay, and they were happy to provide us with a taxi service to and from Henley. Will definitely stay again in future. A lovely part of the world also.

    — Johnny Kersse, (GB), Booking.com, 15 Apr 2018
  • Absolutely the best B&B in the Henley area, and I can attest to this because I have stayed at them all.
Natalie and Raymond are wonderful Hosts’ and have made my stays very special.
The accommodations are excellent, and the breakfast undeniably superb. Eggs are right from the owners hens that freely roam about the grounds.
The place is located in the wonderful English countryside, yet easy access to downtown Henley and an array of local restaurants nearby, one of which, I would never have discovered or even found had it not been for Natalie and Raymond. [That place is a must, and the proprietors will know where I mean. ]
I truly look forward to my next visit.

  • My daughter and son in law spent a night at Handywater Cottage and they had a marvelous time. Ray and Natalie were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them. It is a beautiful setting and the bedroom was much more than 5* with every need catered for. My family would have no hesitation in returning to this lovely old house with a modern twist to the two standalone and private rooms in the grounds. Well worth a visit if you are near Henley. Penny

  • Better still having a pub serving great food next door by a chef who trained under Raymond Blanc!
    Excellent breakfast. Great home-from-home experience.

    — Georgina, (GB), Booking.com, 06 Mar 2018
  • What a find!
I booked this on behalf of friends who can quite fussy about accommodation, and this is what they told me to say - The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The owners were super helpful and friendly. The breakfast was absolutely amazing and we were even given some fresh eggs from the resident hens to take home.
    Nothing. Everything was perfect.

    — Gillian Wood, Facebook.com, 22 Nov 2017
  • Highly, highly recommended. Go treat yourself.
Everything. Firstly the hosts Ray and Natalie are so welcoming, friendly, thoughtful and interesting. We only stayed one night, unfortunately, and departed feeling we had left good friends behind. Secondly the rooms are immaculate, spotlessly clean, peaceful, very comfortable beds and Natalie's attention to detail is to be applauded. Thirdly a lovely breakfast with healthy choices if required sets you up for the day. The whole package really exceeded our expectations, thank you again Ray and Natalie.

  • "Simply the best !!" Natalie and Ray run a fabulous BandB. The rooms are super and the breakfast is excellent, it really sets you up for the day. Natalie runs the show, whilst Ray takes care of Monty and Lollo (Burmese cats) and the garden.Fortunately we were warned in advance but still found Monty trying to stowaway in our car on the last day !! Would we recommend Handywater ? You bet we would. We had a wonderful three nights and will be back. Thank you Natalie, Ray, Monty and Lollo for a lovely time. xx

  • Amazing B&B.
Everything is was perfect! We stayed here for a friends wedding but it was also our 7 year anniversary and they did everything to make it feel like a special break for us. The room was immaculately clean as if we were the first people to ever sleep in it and the service was fantastic. We woke up to and 5* breakfast, the choice wasn’t like anything I’ve had before! Choice of cooked breakfasts plus cereal, pastries, fruit and yoghurt all displayed so beautiful with fresh red roses! I couldn’t praise them more and it was absolutely worth the money spent.

  • Exceeded expectation!
Just returned from an overnight stay at this fabulous place ! Where can I start ... beautiful location ! Beautiful accommodation! Very clean and very tastefully done , bed very comfy ! Was greeted on arrival by Natalie and few glasses of prosecco! What more can a girl ask for ! Natalie's breakfast was delicious! Would recommend highly as one of the nicest B&B's we've stayed will definitely return again for another stay !

    — Lucy W., TripAdvisor, 17 Oct 2017
  • Truly a gem! I stayed here for a two night visit while conducting business in the area, and I must say I could've stayed for a month! The proprietors Ray and Natalie are the nicest people on the planet and the most gracious hosts you could ever ask for. The grounds and accommodations are beautiful and breakfast was scrumptious. The best part of the trip though was the caring that Ray and Natalie put in to ensure all my needs were cared for. Sometimes its the little things that one appreciates most. Thank you for your hospitality and I look forward to coming back again soon!

    — Steve Baker, TripAdvisor, 14 Oct 2017
  • Great! Friendly, fun and arty quirkiness.
The owners were very friendly, very hospitable. My only wish would have been that we didn't have to sit at the same table as others for breakfast. There are time spots but if others come for their time slot early or if you spend a bit longer than intended eating or waiting for food then others join you at same table. I'm sociable but not that sociable to share my breakfast table with strangers. For this price I would have expected a private breakfast room. Sorry but I was expecting it for us only. If there were more people it would have been very crowded and strangers eating together just didn't feel right. There should be another couple of tables available. We loved meeting the pets, cats, chickens and fish. Great happy and colourful artwork. All lovely. Thank you and hope the comments are not taken personally. Paula and Gareth.
Eating on the same breakfast table with strangers was a bit awkward.

    — Paula, (GB), Booking.com, 09 Oct 2017

  • Cant wait to return.......
Really lovely, comfortable room in converted cow shed, attached to beautiful country cottage. Very nicely decorated rooms, little terrace at the back, very private with small table and chairs, perfect to watch the sunset. Right next door to Golden Ball Pub (food is superb!). Can't wait to go back. Breakfast was excellent. Hosts very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding areas, places to eat, shop etc.

    — FifiLeBonBon, (GB), Booking.com, 25 Sep 2017
  • WOW.......the most lovely 500 year old cottage B & B owned and hosted by Ray and Natalie who gave us such a warm welcome that when we departed it felt as if we had been visiting old friends. The cottage and bedrooms have been restored with the finest attendance to detail and design, if we had looked for faults there were none. Greeted on arrival by both of them with a glass ( or 2 ) of prosecco we were made to feel very welcome. We were attending a cousin's wedding at the nearby Crooked Billet restaurant and Ray immediately insisted on taking us there and then collecting us when we were ready to leave the party, stopping on the way home around 10.30'ish to show us Ian Flemings mansion now a hospice run by Sue Ryder. We will be recommending Handywater to all our friends and we are already planning a return visit when we will spend time exploring nearby Henley on Thames. We stayed overnight from 23rd/24th September and wished we could have stayed another night.

  • Peaceful getaway.
Such a warm welcome from Natalie & Ray. Beautiful house and gardens and amazing rooms. Lovely and quiet and a lovely pub next door. Natalie & Ray really went out of their way to make us feel welcome offering lifts and booking us tables for dinner. Thank you for a lovely weekend, we hope to see you again soon!

  • Home away from home!
If you are looking for a home away from home choose Handywater B&B. Natalie and Ray went above and beyond to make us feel welcome - particularly on arrival as we were greeted with...a glass of prosecco! They also offered their services as our personal taxi drivers into and home from town. The bedroom was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. Thank you both for a weekend full of laughter!

    — Katie, (GB), Booking.com, 17 Sep 2017
  • Absolutely marvellous !, we stayed over the recent Bank Holiday weekend for our 42nd wedding anniversary and can honestly say that 'perfection' does not do this location & accommodation full justice (there must be a stronger word !). From the lovely welcome right through to the most sincere 'good-bye', we felt that we were Royalty. Nothing was too much trouble for this lovely couple and as regular visitors to the Chilterns (from down here on the Isle of Wight) we will not be staying anywhere else in future. We have been fortunate-enough to have travelled extensively around the World over the years, staying in a wide variety of hotels, guest houses & b&b's, but Handywater certainly rates right up there at the top of the list. Well done Natalie and Ray and a great big 'thank you' - we shall see you again soon

    — Monica & Nigel, 04 Sep 2017
  • This is the most fantastic B&B we have stayed in. Natalie & Ray are very welcoming, with a cold glass of proseco. The breakfast is fantastic and all freshly cooked, with a very comprehensive choice. The cottage is delightful and the bedroom we had, in the bungalow was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We highly recommend this place and will definately be staying again. Thank you both for a very enjoyable weekend.

Natalie and Ray were so welcoming and friendly, - they really made us feel at home from the minute we arrived at their beautiful house. Our room felt so luxurious, from the huge double shower to the comfy sumptuous bed, it was perfect! The views of the surrounding countryside were stunning and the garden was so well kept and pretty. It really is a wonderful retreat, where you come away feeling relaxed and spoilt. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious as well! We shall definitely be returning one day :)

  • Best B&B I have stayed in.
Handywater cottage is located in Little Assenden close to Henley on Thames and run and owned by Natalie and Ray. The quality of our two night stay was at the top end of excellent due to the kindness and help of our hosts. Our room was of a particularly high standard ( a vase of yellow roses adorned the room). Outside was a small patio where we could relax and enjoy the sun and rural view. The room was quiet; the bathroom was fitted with high quality materials and the bed large which meant a good night's sleep before enjoying a magnificent breakfast served in a lovely dining room. Next door is a great restaurant. We will go back.

    — adcta, TripAdvisor, 21 Aug 2017
  • Natalie and Ray could not have made us feel more welcome. The Prosecco on arrival was a wonderful touch and very much enjoyed whilst sat in the sun on the patio overlooking the beautiful fields and countryside. The accommodation was stunning, exceptionally clean and homely and the full English home cooked breakfast before we left was just delicious. Everything about our stay was perfect - thank you for having us Natalie and Ray. Your home is a real credit to you both and we will be back to see you both next year!

  • Fantastic Cottage!
We had a very nice one night stay in this lovely cottage, which is located in a beautiful part of the country side.
We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco, by 2 very friendly hosts, Raymond and Natalie. They also have 2 very beautiful and friendly cats :)
Rooms were very nice and clean.
Also, a nice breakfast with a large selection was served in the morning.
Thanks again to Natalie who prepared the breakfast very early (I was taking part to the Thames Marathon), and offered a lift to the Henley Leander Club.
    Highly recommended.

Fantastic B&B, run expertly by the beautiful Natalie, supported by Raymond, an old sea dog full of tales of the high seas! They couldn't do enough for us! Divine beds, bedding, large shower and pretty patio! Breakfasts were a treat! Great location to Henley, will definitely stay again!

  • Natalie provides a fantastic experience: the main house and courtyard is delightful, and the purpose built cottages are beautiful, and have all amenities you might want for a little stay. There is also a quiet garden out back for coffee and views of the hills. Natalie provided us with a fantastic breakfast in the morning, at a time of our choice, and was super generous by giving us a lift to and from the wedding we were attending. Highly recommend this AirBnB property.

Natalie and Ray were "off the charts" in terms of customer service. Both are extremely friendly and accommodating. Not only did they drive me to my meeting in the morning, they also offered to have me join them for dinner at a local pub. Was so much fun! Natalie's breakfast was excellent - she definitely knows how to make proper eggs - and her fried toast is delicious - Gordon Ramsey would be proud!

A stunning B & B with delightful hosts. Set in picturesque countryside, this accommodation hits all the marks. We spend one warm comfortable night en route to Kent. Breakfast was comprehensive from continental to full English. the grounds was kept lovely (Ray said it was down to him....Mmm I wonder.!!! think Natalie might say different.!), Ray and Natalie recommendations of places to eat by night never disappointed. the location was excellent for the surrounding area. walking distance for Henley. It was a pleasure to meet such lovely hosts who became friends. Thank you both again for a lovely stay. highly recommend.

  • A lovely bed and breakfast property with hospitable hosts .
The bedroom was furnished to a very high standard with an extremely comfortable bed and a hospitality tray including bottled water. It had a great view and its own small private patio. The bathroom was large, well appointed with a good strong shower. Excellent breakfast.

  • Only stayed at the Handywater cottage for a night, but our stay was absolutely fantastic. Ray and Natalie are just so lovely and helpful, they were even so kind to give us a lift to the town centre and picked us up late in the evening too. Breakfast was just delicious and bed very comfortable. Would definitely stay again if in the area. Great hospitality!

  • Handywater heaven.
Ray and Natalie were congenial hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Immaculate and beautiful property in lovely country location with chickens providing the eggs for a generous breakfast. An excellent restaurant next door was the icing on the cake - no need to travel for a Michelin star quality dinner at a reasonable price.
Rooms could have been a bit bigger - hard to fit two suitcases. This didn't really detract from the lovely time though.

  • Wonderful place, will be staying again and hopefully spend more time with the owners, wonderful couple. Stunning rooms, extremely clean, amazing location, super food. I have stayed in many places around the area but for me this is the one.

  • A perfect retreat for a weekend in the beautiful countryside.
Lovely cottage and exceedingly comfy bed. Exceptionally welcoming hosts who were very good company, and we were very grateful for the lift into town and back for our supper. Thank you Natalie & Ray for making us feel very much at home.

  • Beautiful. We found this wonderful place to stay by chance. I wish I could keep this a secret but it wouldn't be fair. What a beautiful setting only a mile or so from Henley. The accommodation is 5 star. The decor and the bathroom in the cottage is exquisite. What value for money. Our hosts, Natalie and Raymond were wonderful and charming, oh and the breakfast was magnificent. Truthfully I did not want to leave. When you consider what the prices are in the hotels nearby this wonderful accommodation is an absolute bargain. We will be returning when we have more time to relax. Thank you Natalie and Raymond and I hope you had a wonderful birthday Natalie. Hopefully we will see you again soon!

  • We were made most welcome from arrival. The owners Natalie and Ray are perfect hosts. The accommodation is just perfect. Everything just as it should be. The breakfast is delicious, with all you need to get you going for the day. The B and B is located in a beautiful valley with wonderful views from the secure gardens. We will return later in the year, and would recommend this B and B to anyone...

  • Perfect.
We couldn't believe our luck with Handywater Cottage. We thought we had hit the jackpot. We would far rather stay in this kind of accommodation than a hotel and I would rate this far higher than a 5* hotel. You would never get such personal attention and Natalie and Ray certainly gave us that in oodles. The standard of the facilities is fantastic and the breakfast top notch. It is situated in glorious countryside and very handy for Henley. A must for anyone wanting to experience a warm, welcoming experience.

  • Faultless. Much better than a hotel.
My husband and I absolutely loved everything about our stay. The room was beautifully decorated, the beds were very comfortable the view was beautiful, breakfast was excellent and our hosts could not have been more welcoming.
We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more or received more of a welcome if we had booked into a five star hotel. I would recommend Handywater Cottage to anyone.

  • Fantastic find.
Handywater cottage was like a home from home. Newly built everything was clean and fresh. The bed was so comfy. We had the best nights sleep in peaceful surroundings. My husband and I had the Wisteria cottage which had a patio overlooking a small orchard, great place to sit and have a coffee in the morning while nature wakes up around you. Full English or continental breakfast anything you wish for and a restaraunt just next door that serves award winning food for a cosy evening meal Hosts Natalie and Raymond were fantastic and could not do enough for us. We didn't want to go home and are looking forward to going back.

  • Found a little piece of heaven.
We found Handywater by pure chance and it was as though it was meant to be. It was the last night of our travels and we wished we had found it earlier as we did not really want to go home. We were in Wisteria room which has a patio overlooking a small orchard. It was so peaceful and very clean. We had the best nights sleep with hypoallergenic bedding and a Hypnos mattress. I have a bad back and rarely get a good nights sleep, Well I was out cold. We were greeted with a glass of wine and a chat about the area Natalie and Raymond really do take care of their guests nothing was too much for this wonderful couple Natalie prepares a full English breakfast with anything you could wish for. If you prefer a lighter breakfast there are also cereals, croissants, juices and fruit. Next door is a restaurant which serves award winning food and we had a lovely evening meal. We will be going back and have already planned our next trip.

  • From the moment we arrived at Natalie and Ray's home we were made to feel very welcome. We even had our wedding photos taken in their garden! After pulling into their drive from a long afternoon spent setting up our wedding venue, they invited us straight into their garden for a much-needed glass of prosecco and a chat. The room was comfortable and stylish, and had lovely views over the countryside. Natalie's breakfasts were a highlight of our stay! She provided us with an incredible spread, with everything from fresh berries to a full English. We couldn't recommend this AirBnB enough!

  • “Perfect in every way!”
We needed somewhere to stay near Henley for a family occasion and were lucky enough to choose this exceptional B & B. Our hosts Ray and Natalie could not have been more helpful and kind. The breakfast was ample and delicious and nothing was too much trouble. We cannot recommend this place too highly and we will certainly be staying there again next time we are visiting family.

  • We loved staying with Natalie and Ray! We stayed for one night and were attending a wedding nearby. From the moment we drove up they made us feel at home. They welcomed us with a hot cup of tea and then helped us to book a table next door for an amazing lunch! The two rooms were lovely and there is a separate bathroom for guests. They provided everything you could need: towels, shampoo, conditioner and an amazing atmosphere. The great stay ended with our breakfast (which was more like a feast!) in the morning before we left. We would definitely stay with Natalie and Ray again if I had any reason to be in the area!

  • We had a wonderful time at Natalie and Raymond’s. They are the most welcoming and attentive guests. The cottage is full of character and charm, in a picturesque countryside and very close to the lovely Henley-on-Thames. Our rooms were perfect - comfortable, very clean, and quiet. And you couldn’t dream of a better breakfast the following morning, so well prepared by Nathalie, and served in the lovely dinning room. The nearby restaurant is also great, super food, and atmosphere, and so convenient to just walk there. We had a great stay and can only warmly recommend it.

  • “Simply stunning, a beautiful home and wonderful hosts”
We can't thank Natalie and Raymond enough for such warm and welcoming hospitality in their exquisite home. Set in stunning surroundings just a few miles from Henley, the perfect location to explore such a beautiful and diverse area. The rooms we enjoyed were peaceful and beautifully presented, and a delicious home cooked breakfast certainly set us all up for the day. We'd more than recommend Handywater Cottage to anyone looking for a 5 star weekend with all the trimmings enjoyed in the company of two genuinely thoughtful & lovely hosts. We hope to be back soon!

  • The cottage is located in a beautiful area just outside Henley on Thames. The views all around are stunning and there is a very nice restaurant next door. The room was clean and tidy and the bed very comfy. The breakfast was out of this world! But none of this compared to the incredible hospitality shown by Natalie and Ray. I have never felt so at home and comfortable when staying in a BnB. They certainly go the extra mile to make their guests feel at home.

They went out of their way to welcome us in their home, and share their appreciation and knowledge of Henley and the countryside. Not only were they gracious and generous hosts (and wonderful cooks) they are now wonderful friends. Thank you Natalie and Ray !!!
